Lunar Owl’s Business Expertise Helps Offworld Industries Secure An Equity Partner.

It takes a significant amount of talent, a fantastic game idea, and more than a little luck for developers to sign on any investor in the overcrowded gaming marketplace.
But with the right contacts and a good deal of business knowledge, luck can be given a nudge.

For Lunar Owl’s client, Offworld Industries, it was the right blend of all the necessary ingredients, plus a bit of help from the business experts, that got them a seven-figure deal with one of the largest videogame companies in the world.

This is what happened.

The Right Contacts.

While Investors are always interested in great ideas, their paths often don’t converge with all developers, unless someone facilitates a meeting. With Offworld Industries, this was not necessary.

They were a well-known modding team in the industry, and their Investor came across them at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Since they had already had success with modding teams in the past, they were already optimistic about Offworld.
The Investor liked Offworld Industries’ game which was already in the marketplace and believed in the teams’ long term prospects and roadmap.

But there was a challenge. Offworld Industries had limited experience dealing with Investors and they didn’t know what to expect.

Coming up with the Right Strategy with Lunar Owl.

It was at this stage that the Offworld Industries team met Lunar Owl at GDC. Since their goal was to focus on their game and cater to the players, they felt overburdened by the time-consuming and tedious process of pitching an Investor, predicting financials, negotiating, and finally getting the deal signed after months of back-and-forth. They realized that they needed help.

Lunar Owl, with their 25+ years of experience advising Management Teams and Boards of Directors on how to grow their businesses, recognized that without the right business mindset, Offworld’s amazing deal opportunity might not get off the ground.

Lunar Owl offered their business expertise to supplement Offworld Industries’ excellent creative talent.

A Relevant Example.

While working with the client, Lunar Owl started with one of the major questions they knew the Investor would ask in any pitch meeting, and that was how much Offworld Industries was worth. The instinct here for developers is to put forward a number and try to justify it. A basic, harmless question at first thought, but one that needs to be well thought out in order to get a developer to her/his next goalpost and properly understand where they sit in the marketplace. Most developers in this situation don’t do a good job of evaluating themselves; either too high or too low, and not many using objective means to get to the right number.

Lunar Owl helped Offworld to understand that a better strategy would be to simply say they didn’t know, because it is common for game developers not to know the valuation of their company and Investors appreciate the honesty. With guidance from Lunar Owl, the client said they would get back to the Investor with the valuation, and the first hurdle to getting the deal signed was crossed. Now they could focus on finding out objectively what their Valuation sits at.

Financials and Other Business Essentials.

Next, Lunar Owl helped the client’s team project Financials like Cash Flows from their game SQUAD and the value of competitive games to find their valuation.

In addition, they spent time with the client to create a mini strategy plan; including their vision and objectives, and strategies for how the client would achieve those objectives. This strategy impressed the Investor, and before long, Offworld Industries had signed a deal with one of the most ubiquitous and largest video game firms in the world.

Result.

It’s common for independent game developers to focus on the creative side versus the business side of their company. In the case of Offworld Industries, they were a developer who focused solely on the Creative side but knew they needed to spend time on the Business side of their company in order to secure the equity. By combining both the Creative (their game, which the Investor loved) and the Business (Lunar Owl guiding them to build up their valuation through the creation of materials), they were able to level up as a company and breakthrough the wall that blocked their way.
